How the "Apollo 1" Covers Were Created

'TREYCO' Logo

Generic "TREYCO" NASA Cachet

"TREYCO" was a First Day Cover servicing company founded by Allen Banks, who later
became the Vice President of SCCS. Banks and Harry Anderson, who became the President
of SCCS, used the previously printed "TREYCO" cachet covers that were in colors of
orange, green and blue, to obtain the January 27, 1967 Post Office cancel.

Black Overprint Design

The black border and type was designed to be overprinted on the Generic "TREYCO"
NASA Cachets and was added after the covers had been canceled by the Post Office.

Two different Post Office Cancels were used

It was not discovered until after all of the covers had been canceled, that two different
cancels had been used. It is not known how many of each cancel exists as there
was not any record made of the number of each type of cancel.
